#9962 Hinchcliffe, Peter. (Ed). THE JOURNAL OF JOHN AYLIFF. I: 1821 - 1830. The Graham's Town Series 1. The Rev. John Ayliff, 1820 Settler and a well-known pioneer missionary in the Eastern Cape, kept a detailed diary both for himself and as required of Methodist Missionaries to make detailed reports to London. This primarily records his life as a pastor, and personal and family affairs are only mentioned in passing. One of the few contemporary documents to have survived dealing with the first decade of the Albany settlement. The 3 volumes of Ayliffe's journal covering the period 1821 to 1851 are among his papers in the Government Archives in Cape Town. Gilt on brown cb. 130pp illustrated b/w plates. indexed. No inscrip. Mint in VG d/w (cream stock sl.soiled only). Rhodes University, Grahamstown. / Balkema, Cape Town. 1971.

#9974 Hammond-Tooke. (Ed). THE JOURNAL OF WILLIAM SHAW. The Graham's Town Series 2. William Shaw, minister to the 1820 Settlers and missionary statesman ranks in historical significance with David Livingston and Robert Moffatt. An outstanding missionary he acted as spiritual guide and adviser to the settlers in a period of trials and problems. The first part of his journal covers the period 1820-21 when at Salem laying the foundations of Methodism among the settlers. He gives detailed descriptions of the physical labour, the disappointments and joys of his task. The second period 1827-29 covers his work at Wesleyville among the Gqunukhwebe, the first of a chain of mission stations stretching from the Eastern Cape to Natal which were his memorial. It is a valuable account of the early impact of mission teaching on a pagan society. Gilt on brown cb. 220pp illustrated b/w plates. indexed. No inscrip. Mint in VG d/w (cream stock sl.soiled only). Rhodes University, Grahamstown. / Balkema, Cape Town. 1972.

#9975 Rainier, Margaret. (Ed). THE JOURNALS OF SOPHIA PIGGOT 1819-1821. The Graham's Town Series 3. Eliza Sophia Pigot, daughter of an 1820 Settler leader, spent her childhood in comfortable circumstances in England. After her family immigrated she shared the experiences of a pioneer community, brought unsuspectingly to South Africa to form a barrier between advancing African tribes and long-established districts in the Eastern Cape. In 1824 she married Donald Moodie, one of three talented brothers from Orkney; she bore him fourteen children, and his career took them successively to the Kowie, Graham's Town, Graaf Reinett, Cape Town, and Natal. Her diary records her visit to the Cape and the first phase of settlement in Albany. Gilt on brown cb. 172pp illustrated b/w plates. indexed. No inscrip. Mint in VG d/w (cream stock sl.soiled only). Rhodes University, Grahamstown. / Balkema, Cape Town. 1974.

He was a volunteer in the war of 1834, founded the Mounted Rangers, and became the hero of Albany in the wars of 1846 and 1850. Chapters on the Sixth and Seventh Frontier Wars. Written when in ailing health in 1874 his autobiography makes a work of literary and historical interest. Includes his separate essay, "Men I Have Known". Extensive notes and appendices. Gilt on brown cb. 302pp illustrated b/w plates, maps. indexed. No inscrip. VG in d/w (cream stock sl.soiled with small blue mark on spine and front). #9977 Duminy, A.H. & Adcock, L.J.G. THE REMINISCENCES OF RICHARD PAVER. The Graham's Town Series 5. After completing his engineering apprenticeship, Richard Paver emigrated to the Eastern Cape in 1843. He worked on the watermills at Sidbury and Glenthorn before entering into an agreement with Sir Andries Stockenstrom to erect a mill at Maasstroom. His reminiscences, written about forty years later, deal largely with his experiences during the frontier wars which ensued. In 1846 he was a member of the burgher force which, under Stockenstrom's command, cleared the Amatolas before striking out across the Kei River. After war had broken out again at the end of 1850, he and his brother Henry remained at Maasstrom, attempting to defend the position until it was destroyed by fire eight months later. Paver's reminiscences provide vivid insight into a little-known and contentious phase in the history of the eastern frontier. Notes and bibliography. Gilt on brown cb. 135pp illustrated b/w plates, maps. indexed. No inscrip. Mint in VG d/w (cream stock sl.soiled only). Rhodes University, Grahamstown. / Balkema, Cape Town. 1979.

#9978 Giffard, A. (Ed). THE REMINISCENCES OF JOHN MONTGOMERY. Graham's Town Series 6. John Montgomery, an Irish lad who emigrated to the Cape with the 1820 Settlers (with Butler's party aboard the Fanny), stands out as one of the most colourful of those articulate enough to leave a written record. During the fifty eight years that he lived in South Africa he participated in every major phase of the country's development: the Albany settlement, the expansion of the frontier, the Great Trek to the interior, wars with the Xhosa and the Basuto. He was a man of many parts: sailor, tinker, trader, farmer, hunter and explorer. He was also a journalist - and as such an excellent witness. Even though parts of his reminiscences were written decades after the events they described, the names, places, and dates he mentions can be checked and verified. He fathered 14 children, won and lost several fortunes, yet never lost his sense of humour or the respect of his contemporaries. Gilt on brown cb. 202pp illustrated b/w plates. indexed. No inscrip. Mint, no d/w. Rhodes University, Grahamstown. / Balkema, Cape Town. nd (1981).

He visited Scotland, and during 1850-1857 studied for the ministry, was ordained and married a Scots lass, Janet Burnside. They settled at the Emgwali mission station. This volume reproduces writings from his journal and letters. A prolific writer, he composed hymns, was a member of the Board of Revisers of the Kafir Bible, and even wrote letters to the press. His journal covers the period 1857-1870 and his letterbook the period 1858-1862. Included in this volume are his letters to the King William's Town Gazette. a lecture given in Cape Town, and hymns attributed to him. He died in 1871. Notes and bibliography.
