Over 200 photographs. Much of the text was originally published in the "Pretoria News" under the column "Landmarks of Old Pretoria". Looks at the buildings of Kruger's day and the men who built, lived, and worked in them. While not a definitive history of Pretoria, this volume provides a detailed overview of what in any case is a short history and which has not been superceded.

Many interesting historical photographs of places and people. This item was prepared to coincide with the quatrocentenary of the landing of Jan Van Riebeeck at the Cape in 1652 and as such was carried to Cape Town in a replica of one of the Zeederberg mail coaches.

Now effectively a suburb of Pretoria, Irene was founded adjacent to the farm so named by Alois Hugo Nellmapius who first settled there in 1889. Today it still survives as a rural and private hamlet. An excellent collection of photographs reproduced here document years gone by with author's detailed history of the area and its colourful personalities of the past.

Nellmapius made and lost several fortunes in his lifetime and was a close friend and confidant of Paul Kruger. The first digger on the Transvaal goldfields to use dynamite, he also founded a distillery, held the first concession to make gunpowder, was the first to attempt to produce steel in South Africa, and established a model farm in Irene near to Pretoria which still exists today.
