#16533 Fitzpatrick, J.P. THE TRANSVAAL FROM WITHIN. A Private Record of Public Affairs. Dark olive green cloth boards. xxvi + 364pp. map. Bookplate ffep. protective covering secured to pastedowns. A good clean sound copy. Heinemann. London October 1899. 2nd impression.
A contemporary account of the events leading up to and surrounding the Jameson Raid during 1895-96, with the Boer War as its inevitable aftermath. Originally written in 1896 it was held over due to the three year ban imposed on the writer (and others in the Reform Committee) forbidding them from interference in politics by President Kruger. Fearful that early publication would provide the excuse for the government to banish them from the Transvaal it was privately circulated only in June 1899. It was then updated and published in September that year. Many useful appendices
