The text of this volume is a series of letters, dated 1861 & 1862, originally published in the Cape Monthly Magazine from 1870 to 1879. They vividly describe life in the Cape Town of those years. The name of the author of the letters is unknown for certain, but has been the subject of much speculation. The letters are probably the work of various parties. This edition illustrated with contemporary drawings by Thomas Bowler.

Letters from 1820 through to 1830. Some of the letters were published in "Scenes And Occurences In Albany And Caffer-Land, South Africa" (Marsh 1827). Thomas Philipps sailed as an 1820 Settler on the "Kennersley Castle" as leader of the Pembrokeshire 'Party' in order to make a new start in life. His letters, commencing onboard ship on January 11th 1820, run to 1830.

Dr William Guybon Atherstone was a remarkable man: medical pioneer, scientist, naturalist, parliamentarian, explorer, family man, keen observer of plants, animals, minerals, the heavens, and of course people. His interests included photography, religion, ostrich farming, railways, harbours and bridges, carpentry, building and electricity among others. His copious notes cover topics as diverse as veterinary research, hunting hints, preserving fruit, explosives, measuring instruments, soil analysis, and the utilisation of crayfish refuse! A lifetime's notes have been linked into an autobiography of incredible detail.

Pringle originally published 'African Sketches' in 1834 of which this is a reprint without the poetry included therein and with the addition of Conders biographical sketch. That poetry, with additions, was later published by the same publisher in 1838, under the title 'The Poetical Works Of Thomas Pringle'. An 1820 Settler, Pringle left the Eastern Cape for Cape Town, finally returning to England where he was the secretary of the Anti-Slavery Society. He is regarded as the father of South African poetry.

German immigration to the Cape, specifically to the Eastern Cape, numerically exceeded the numbers of the 1820 British Settlers. This text was originally a dissertation approved for a Doctorate at Rhodes University and provides a dense but readable account with many appendices, lists of names and ships, land grants, etc.

Originally written in 1969 this book roundly condemned the Nigerian attack on secessionist Biafra which proceeded with the tacit approval and assistance of the British government who supplied a tidal wave of arms to the Nigerian military. New epilogue. Forsyth was correspondent for the BBC in Biafra prior to becoming a succesfull novelist.
