At the start of the Boer War they were relocated to be used in the sieges of Ladysmith, Mafeking, & Kimberley. After the relief of these towns the Boer army had to adopt guerilla tactics and thus the guns were destroyed to prevent them from falling into the hands of the British. Sifting through rumour the author attempts to determine the true fate of these pieces, concluding that even with all the facts some mysteries will remain unsolved.

The truce for the fighting in German East Africa was not signed until 2 weeks after the Versailles Treaty. This war was fought at an astonishing cost in both human & monetary terms but was viewed in military quarters as a 'sideshow'. An area five times the size of Germany was devastated in action described as 'a war of extermination and attrition without parallel in modern times' and with civilian suffering on a scale unimaginable in Europe. This was so overshadowed by the war in Europe as to have been conducted in a veil of secrecy without the daily media coverage of events in the European theatre. Using any yardstick other than the war in Europe the scale of this conflict was gargantuan and approached that of Boer war.
