A sound set, contents excellent. sold w.a.f. Printed for the Government of the Cape Colony 1897-1905.
Theal painstakingly copied all the Cape Colony records by hand during visits to London, there being no mechanical way of doing so at the time. This work records all letters, reports, debates, plans, etc. A major opus of considerable historical interest covering, amongst much else, the 1820 Settlers.

John Fairbairn is remembered as a champion of press freedom in South Africa and also as the founder and first Chairman of the Old Mutual. Sometime politician, he was responsible for seeing that the Cape Colony did not become a penal colony as the Colonial authorites had planned. He was a close friend of Thomas Pringle during his time in the Cape.

At the age of 23 Frank Johnson contracted with Rhodes to enlist and equip the pioneer corps, cut a 400-mile road from Palapye to Mount Hampden, occupy Mashonaland, and hand all over for civil administration at a cost of £87,500. This he did on 12th September 1990 making a profit of £20,000. He was earlier involved in the Langberg campaign, otherwise known as the 1897 Bechuanaland rebellion. In India he was in command of Lahore during the 1919 uprising.

Knight was a well-established journalist of his day, the correspondent for The Times for many years. He visited Rhodesia in 1894 and his assessment of the country was given in a series of articles for The Times dealing with labour, climate, agriculture, emigration, Britis South Africa Company mining law, the Chartered Company's goldfields, communications and administration. These later appeared in book form.
