Brownlee led a long and active life in the administration of the Transkei territory from the late 19thC through to the early 1930s. A collection of first-hand tales including his account of the annexation of Pondoland. Some of the stories were published in the East London Daily Dispatch, others reconstructed from authors notes after originals sent to a London publisher were listed missing.

The 1820 Irish parties of Parker, Butler, Ingram, & Synnot were diverted from the Eastern Cape by acting governor Sir Rufane Shaw Donkin on account of the number of settlers arriving vastly exceeding those expected and provided for. Arrangements were made to settle the Irish parties in Clanwilliam in the Western Cape. This led to a crisis of confidence in the settler leadership, contributing to the collapse of the Clanwilliam settlement and the dispersion of the settlers. Some regrouped and moved to the intended destination of Albany. Preliminary chapters on the situation pertaining in Ireland, England, & Europe prior to emigration and another of the emigration scheme and assembly of the four parties. Brief outline biographies of the settlers, amended lists of settlers, and appendix on the author's settler forebear, Robert Dickason, and his children.

Gift inscription by editor (v.d. Riet) on half-title page. One of the most informative and readable accounts of early experiences of the founding of the Albany Settlement in the Eastern Cape Province. The second part records his recollections of the 1835 (6th) Frontier War when he was a missionary at Mount Coke and Wesleyville. Originally published in 'The South African Methodist', this is found only in this G&S edition of 'Reminiscences'.

Transcribed and edited by Arthur Rabone from letters and diaries of both the Essex & Rabone families. Alfred Essex, then proprietor of the Graaff Reinet Herald, wrote inviting his father and sisters in England to join him to escape the depression there. Their ship, the barque "Cuba", was wrecked 4 miles from Port Elizabeth. William Rabone's diary of the voyage is here followed with the letters written by his wife Harriet (nee Essex) to her friend in London giving a vivid description of life in a small South African town at that time. Spans the years 1851 to 1890.

Limited edition. Copy No. 281 of 1000. Half of the text deals almost exclusively with the War Of The Axe alone, (the 7th Frontier War of 1846-1847). Stationed in the centre of the action near to Fort Peddie his journal records events as they happened. Also he recounts the War of Umlangeni (the 8th Frontier War of 1850-1852) centred around King Williams's Town where he was then located. An educated man, his journal is the best civilian account with much detail and a good style. The balance of the book deals with various aspects of his missionary work, recording his translation of the Bible into a uniform Xhosa edition which was his major work, "just what suits my cast of mind".

Copy No.720 of 750. An 1820 Settler, Pringle left the Eastern Cape for Cape Town, finally returning to England as the secretary of the Anti-Slavery Society. He is regarded as the father of South African poetry. Includes Josiah Conder's biographical sketch. The 'Index To ...' was printed separately and is rarely found with the volume.

Contains an interesting chapter on the Kimberley diamond rush - as a result of Port Elizabeth being a main port of entry to the interior at that time - the resulting trade reviving the flagging fortunes of the whole Cape Colony, and Port Elizabeth in particular. Includes newspaper clipping concerning the inadvertent firing of two shells from a British warship berthed in the harbour that just missed the Campanile.

The first wave of Indian immigrants arrived in South Africa as indentured labourers, followed by a second wave known as Passenger Indians - individuals who had paid their own fare. Being the last wave of immigrants to enter a British colony, the Indians saw themselves, and were perceived by others, as a homogeneous group originating from India. The apartheid state as well as anti-apartheid organisations saw advantages in this. Author analyses this construct and shows how Indian identity is being transformed to meet the challenges of the new democratic South Africa.

Scarce first edition of this early work. The BaVenda then occupied approximately one third of the inhabited territory of the Zoutpansberg district in the Northern Transvaal. An extensive analysis of the people, their agriculture, food, industries, as well as their life stages, property, succession, inheritance, social groupings, concepts such as weather, astronomy, time and seasons, numbers, religion, medicine, magic rain-making & fertility, music, dancing, song, and folklore.

The regimental history covers the 6th to 8th Frontier Wars of the Eastern Cape that raged from 1835 to 1853, the Langeberg campaign of 1897 in Bechuanaland, and includes service through World War II.
