#15254 Mitchel, John. (Prisoner In The Hands Of The English). JAIL JOURNAL. With An Introductory Narrative Of Transactions In Ireland. List of biographical details of contemporaries mentioned. Imprisoned in 1848 and sentenced to 14 years transportation for political agitation during the Irish uprising, author was on board the convict ship "Neptune" at the Cape Of Good Hope during the anti-convict rebellion from September 19th 1849 when the ship anchored in Simonstown until March 19th 1850 when it sailed for Tasmania. The anti-convict movement was in full force denying the landing of convicts, employment for them, or food and provisons. Almost 50pp devoted to his enforced stay there. Originally published in "The Citizen", Mitchel's first New York newspaper, from January to August 1854, the chapters on the Cape give a view thereof not recorded elsewhere.

#15182 De Mist, Jonkvrouw Augusta Uitenhage. DIARY OF A JOURNEY To The Cape Of Good Hope and The Interior Of Africa In 1802 And 1803. The Author was an 18-year old girl when she sailed from Texel with her father to the Cape of Good Hope. Her travels took her first along the Cape west coast as far as Calvinia and then returning south they branched along the east coast travelling past Algoa Bay to the Great Fish River, then to Graaf Reinet, returning across the Karoo. Not a large diary for such a long trip, but she tells a tale that was intended for her family circle. Of note is the description of the voyage out and an early stop for shelter in Plymouth where they visited Lord Barrington.
