Author links two disparate diaries, one by Freda Schlosberg a farmers 14-year old daughter, and one by Alexander Kay an English doctor and war correspondent. She tells of the looting and burning of farms, he of the siege of Ladysmith. Later in Pretoria paths cross as they meet and she asks him for news of a friend. Interesting entry from Kay's journal re Breaker Morant and the Bushveld Carbineers.

Dugmore was a missionary and preacher. He came with his parents as an 1820 Settler to the Eastern Cape and is well known for his "Reminiscences Of An Albany Settler". This is a beautiful little production published on the centenary of the landing of the Settlers.

An informal history of the Matabele. Njube, son of Lobengula and a pretender to the throne of the Matabele was along with other sons put exiled to Cape Town by Rhodes. He later was given a farm in Port Alfred where he died from tuberculosis, a broken man. He was buried at the "native cemetery" in Grahamstown.

No.1194 of 1500. This is the personal narrative of a young Scottish officer who was on garrison duties with the 93rd Highland Regiment of Foot. He also accompanied his regiment to Florida where he took part in the British attempt to capture New Orleans. A keen observer, his narrative of travels in the Cape is of particular interest as social commentary. Includes foldout colour reproduction of his water-colour of Cape Town in 1814. The folding illustration of the Mississipi River is also in colour but the other two illustrations included by the publisher are not in colour as stated on the dust jacket.
