#27704 Crampton, Hazel. THE SIDE OF THE SUN AT NOON. A Quest. 486pp large format softcover. 0.7kg. No inscription. VG condition. Jacana 2014. isbn 9781431409402
In the mid-17th century when the Dutch first settled the Cape of Good Hope, built their fortress and began trading with the indigenous Khoikhoi, they were told of a mysterious people called the Chobona, who lived in stone houses deep in the interior of the country, were rich in gold and cattle and had long hair and pale skins. Believing them to be the legendary people of Monomotapa the Dutch made every effort to reach them but did not succeed in finding the elusive Chobona. Historians would later dismiss the Chobona as fantasy, blaming the stories on what they believed to be the over-active imagination of Eva, a young Khoikhoi girl who was the Dutchmen's main interpreter. Yet the rumours never ceased and the possibility that they were real stays with us. This examines the rumours and follows the footsteps of early explorers from ancient Arab writings, indigenous oral traditions, contemporary historical documents, and modern archaeological discovery. Maybe the author discovered the truth?

#27613 Pemba, George Milwa. MRS GRACE MSIMANG. Pen and ink sketch. The paper shows several wavy marks to the left of the picture, but these are not visible in any scans nor at normal viewing distances. Titled "Mrs Grace Msimang By G.M.M. Pemba Dec. 1981" and also signed "MPemba/81".
Grace Msimang was the eldest of three daughters of Isaiah Bud Mbelle, a former secretary of the SA Native National Congress (SANNC) and a prominent court interpreter in Kimberley and later in Pretoria. Grace's husband, Richard Msimang, was one of the first black lawyers in Johannesburg in the early 1900s and a founder member of the SANNC (later the ANC). Grace was a niece of Sol Plaatje and the sister-in-law of journalist and politician H. Selby Msimang. She was born and grew up in Kimberley and later lived in Johannesburg and Pretoria. Excellent provenance, the present owner was a friend of George Pemba and the sketch was commissioned and purchased by him. Sold unframed. Images upon request.

#27604 Pemba, George Milwa. (1912-2001). MRS ARIAH BOOKHOLANE. Pen and ink sketch on paper of Mrs Ariah Bookholane of New Brighton, Port Elizabeth. Pen and ink sketch on paper. 380mm x 265mm. Slightly foxed and with soft folds visible on closer inspection. See notes. George (Milwa) Pemba 1989.
Signed by artist 1989. Mrs Ariah Bookholane was a well-known school teacher and linguist in New Brighton and a close friend of George Pemba. She did translations for George Pemba from Sesotho to Xhosa / English. Excellent provenance. Excellent provenance, the present owner was a friend of George Pemba and the sketch was commissioned and purchased by him as a companion-piece from an existing formal portrait by the artist. A number of similar Pemba sketches have been examined. It would appear that Pemba was not careful about selecting sheets of paper upon which his sketches were made and this is quite apparent in this example. Framed and at normal viewing distances this is not unacceptable. Sold unframed. Images upon request.

"... Of The Dutch East India Company With Particular Reference To Ceramics With The V.O.C. Monogram, The Cape Market, And South African Collections". The standard work on the subject, this book contains a summary of the ceramic trade of the Dutch East India Company with particular reference to the Cape, a description of the kinds of ceramics sent there from Batavia in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and, through a study of the inventories of deceased estates in the Cape Archives, an account of their surprisingly early importance in the social life of the Colony. A chapter surveys the strengths and weaknesses of South African collections and discusses the role of museum, auctioneer, and dealer in the life of the collector. In addition there is a major section on all the various ceramics with the V.O.C. monogram which includes material from museums in other countries, particularly Holland, and takes account of the continued use of the monogram in the nineteenth century on the well-known Delft tobacco or snuff jars. Oriental martavans, and Chinese porcelain enamelled at Canton with subjects of special interest to South Africans - the arms of Cape families and the Dutch fleet in Table Bay - are also examined in detail. This book is illustrated with photographs from South African public and private collections and, in the case of the V.O.C. section, overseas museums as well. There are a number of line-drawings and text figures by the author.

#27741 Jones, J.D.F. STORYTELLER. The Many Lives Of Laurens Van Der Post.was Black cloth boards. 505pp illustrated 8vo. 0.98kg. No inscription. edges slightly spotted and tanned. overall a VG copy in matching dustwrapper (shows some creasing at spine ends, but no chips, loss, or tears), John Murray. London 2001 1st edition. isbn 9780719555800
A controversial biography, we note that Laurens van der Post mostly succeeded in resisting the importuning of biographers throughout his later life. Hence only one other earlier biography has been written. This particular biography was authorised by the family shortly after his death. They gave the author exclusive access to Van Der Post's papers and also full editorial independence. What he has written demolishes any preconceptions that we might have had about the biographee. "Over a period of fifty years from 1946 to 1996 Laurens created multiple versions of his stories - multiple lives, multiple versions of himself. Maintaining these fabrications must have required a skill bordering on genius". He further writes that van der Post was "a fraud, a fantasist, a liar, a serial adulterer and a paternalist. He falsified his Army record and inflated his own importance at every possible opportunity". Thus is yet another hero felled. See Wikipedia for details of a rebuttal.

Zelda la Grange grew up in South Africa as a white Afrikaner who supported the rules of segregation. Yet just a few years after the end of Apartheid she would become a most trusted assistant to Nelson Mandela, growing to respect and cherish the man she had been taught was the enemy. Good Morning, Mr Mandela tells the extraordinary story of how a young woman had her life, beliefs, prejudices and everything she once believed in utterly transformed by the greatest man of her time. It is the incredible journey of an awkward, terrified young typist in her twenties later chosen to become one of the President's most loyal and devoted servants, spending most of her adult working life travelling with, supporting and caring for the man she would come to call 'Khulu', or 'grandfather'. Here Zelda pays tribute to Nelson Mandela as she knew him - a teacher who gave her the most valuable lessons of her life, a man who refused to be defined by his past, who forgave and respected all, but who was also frank, teasing and direct. As he renewed his country, he also freed Zelda from a closed world of fear and mistrust, giving her life true meaning. Now she shares his lasting and inspiring gifts with the world. This is a book about love and second chances. It will touch your life and make you believe that every one of us, no matter who we are or what we have done, has the power to change.

Charles Michell, the first Surveyor General of the Cape Colony, is remembered today chiefly for the Michell's Pass named after him. As a young man he served in the Peninsular War in some of its bloodiest battles. After lecturing at Sandhurst and Woolwich he departed for the Cape in 1828 to take up his new appointment and spent the next twenty years building roads, bridges, and mountain passes including Sir Lowry's, Mitchell's. and Montagu Passes. He applied his engineering skills to Table Bay Harbour and lighthouses at Mouille Point, Cape Agulhas, and Cape Recife to protect shipping along the notorious Cape coastline. This biography is the result of much original research and detective work. Private diaries and sketchbooks have provided new information allowing a detailed biography of the man. It also sheds light on such contemporaries as Governors Sir Lowry Cole and Sir Harry Smith. An extremely well illustrated work with many contemporary plans, drawings, and paintings including work by Michell himself. We note one chapter devoted to the 6th Frontier War.

During the apartheid years the government employed many weapons against its opponents: imprisonment, banning, detention, assassination, and banishment. In a practice reminiscent of Tsarist and Soviet Russia, a large number of 'enemies of the state' were banished to remote areas, far from their homes, communities and followers. Here their existence became 'a slow torture of the soul', a kind of social death. This is the first study of an important but hitherto neglected group of opponents of apartheid, set in a global, historical and comparative perspective. It looks at the reasons why people were banished, their lives in banishment and the efforts of a remarkable group of activists led by Helen Joseph to assist them.

External Mission is the first study of the ANC's period in exile, based on a full range of sources in southern Africa and Europe. These include the ANC's own archives and also those of the Stasi, the East German ministry that trained the ANC's security personnel. It reveals that the decision to create the Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation) guerrilla army, which later became the ANC's armed wing, was made not by the ANC but by its allies in the South African Communist Party after negotiations with Chinese leader Mao Zedong. Author shows that many of the strategic decisions made, and many of the political issues that arose during the course of that protracted armed struggle had a lasting effect on South Africa, shaping its society even up to the present day.

More than twenty-five years have passed since South Africans were being shot, hacked or burned to death in political conflict. The memory of the traumawhere some 20 500 people were killed between 1984 and 1994 has faded . Conventional politically-correct wisdom claims that they died at the hands of a state-backed Third Force, the more accurate explanation is that they died as a result of the people’s war that the ANC unleashed.

This text tells the story of the lives of migrant black African men who work in the South African gold mines, recounted from their own point of view and, as much as possible, in their own words. Author examines the operation of local power structures and resistances, changes in production techniques, the limits and successes of unionization, and the nature of ethnic conflicts. He treats his subject thematically and historically, examining how notions of integrity, manhood, sexuality, work, power, solidarity, and violence have all changed over time, especially with the shift to a proletarianised work-force on the mines in the 1970s. Moodie shows how human beings build integrity and construct their own social order, even in situations of apparent total repression.

The Guptas, arguably South Africa’s most infamous family, have dominated news headlines for many years. But the landing of a commercial airliner packed with wedding guests at Air Force Base Waterkloof in 2013 sparked the most severe onslaught of public outrage the politically connected family had endured up to that fateful day. Since then, they have become embroiled in allegations of state capture, of dishing out cabinet posts to officials who would do their bidding, and of benefiting from lucrative state contracts and dubious loans. This book examines the various controversies surrounding the family and explores the path that took the brothers Ajay, Atul and Rajesh Gupta from an obscure town in India to the inner circle of South African president Jacob Zuma. Unpacking these and other questions, the author delves deeper than ever before into the Guptas’ business dealings and their links to prominent South African politicians, and explains how one family managed to transform an entire country into The Republic Of Gupta.

South Africa is a country poorly understood in the wider world. There are two main views of the country that persist in the international consciousness and which are often propagated by South Africans themselves. One view holds that after the end of apartheid South Africa's problems were at an end. The other claims that a coterie of criminals is turning one of Africa's few success stories into another Zimbabwe. Both are inaccurate. This book provides a balanced look at the country and points to the real centres of power, which do not include Parliament. This is the true story of post-apartheid South Africa. An extraordinary book by Paul Holden, author of 'The Arms Deal in Your Pocket' and Martin Plaut, the BBC's Africa editor.

"SA's Ultimate MTB Trail". 58 routes and maps. When windmill-dodgers David Bristow and Steve Thomas followed their dream to blaze (and map) a mountain bike trail across South Africa, they hoped to be spared howling headwinds, freezing rain and slushy terrain. They weren't, yet were not deterred from having a mud-splattering good time. The result, the Spine of the Dragon trail, is the country's ultimate mountain bike tour, covering a distance of 4000km from Beit Bridge to Cape Town. Aimed at the average off-road rider, the 58-day trail through South Africa and Lesotho is broken into nine sections, each with several stages. The entire course can be done in one go, or as a series of shorter rides – ideal for those with boundless enthusiasm but limited time. The authors offer valuable advice on preparing for the trail that includes suggested clothing, gear, bike maintenance, food and safety. Each day’s route is described in detail and includes: Customised, annotated map with GPS points; total daily distance; difficulty grading: from short and easy to long and hard; entertaining insight into the people and places along the way; engaging photographs; accommodation suggestions and contact details.

His death, and serious controversy with John Burto, ruled out a third expedition intended to settle the matter.
