In 1910, following King Leopold's death, the Lado Enclave became a province of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, with Stigand appointed Administrator. In 1912 the southern half of the Lado Enclave was ceded to Uganda, then a British protectorate. British authorities failed to effectively administer the area, leaving the enclave to become a 'bad-man's land'. Ivory hunters moved in and shot almost all of an estimated herd of 2000 elephants resident in the enclave between 1909 & 1912. Sources consider that the publicity from this hunt and the resulting public outrage led to the beginnings of the conservation movement. Deals topographically with the area, and further with tribal languages and customs. Final chapters deal with Emin Pasha and the future outlook for the area.
